This document lists sources of funding of African no-fee open access (OA) journals, drawing on examples from institutions and journals from across the continent. No-fee OA journals are often referred to as Diamond OA journals, and do not charge fees for either authors or readers. 

The list is not exhaustive, and most journals draw on more than one source of funding, in addition to receiving in-kind support.  

The list of funding sources was compiled by members of the No-fee OA Publishing in Africa Community of Practice (CoP). The CoP was set up within the ‘Collaboration for sustainable open access publishing in Africa’ project implemented by EIFL, African Journals Online (AJOL) and the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN), with funding from Wellcome. It arises out of the work of the project, and supplements the ‘No-fee Open Access Publishing in Africa Policy Brief’, which addresses leadership of African institutions and shows how Diamond OA journals can help to achieve the goals of more equitable, inclusive, impactful and trusted publishing.
