EIFL and the University of Latvia Library are organizing a webinar on rights retention and secondary publication rights, two powerful tools to boost the achievement of open access to research.

The aim of the webinar, titled ‘Retaining author’s rights to enable open access to research outputs’, is to raise awareness of rights retention policies in Latvia and the issue of secondary publication rights found in European legislation.

The Latvian Open Science strategy 2021-2027 encourages researchers and research institutions to retain copyright in their publications, while Horizon Europe requires rights retention to achieve open access to its research outputs. But how can these policies be implemented? The webinar will provide practical tips for researchers and institutions on how to retain their copyright. It will also introduce secondary publication rights, a legislative measure found in a growing number of countries in Europe, that requires publicly funded research to be made available in open access. Webinar participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and to share practical experiences on how to retain their rights and to comply with open access policies.

The speakers are Milica Ševkušić, EIFL Open Access Programme, Project Coordinator, and Teresa Hackett, EIFL Copyright and Libraries Programme Manager. The webinar is moderated by Uldis Zariņš, Director of the University of Latvia Library.

The one hour webinar is in English and Latvian. It is organized as part of International Open Access Week 2025 - all are welcome to attend.
