We are delighted to announce that the 2023 EIFL General Assembly, our major knowledge-sharing event of the year, will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania, and will be hosted by the Lithuanian Research Libraries Consortium. This will be our first in-person meeting after three years of online General Assemblies, using Zoom, because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
The meeting will take place at the Vilnius County Adomas Mickevicius Public Library. In addition to the usual business of the General Assembly, this year we will celebrate two milestones -
- The 20th anniversary of EIFL as an organization
- The 20th year of the EIFL Open Access Programme
And there will be lots to see and do - Vilnius is celebrating its 700th anniversary in 2023, with events and exhibitions throughout the year. The city of Vilnius was mentioned by name in written sources for the first time in 1323 in a letter sent on 25 January by Gediminas, Grand Duke of Vilnius, to the German cities of Lübeck, Sund, Bremen, Magdeburg, Cologne and other cities in the Holy Roman Empire. In his letter, Gediminas invited knights, squires, merchants, doctors, smiths, wheelwrights, cobblers, skinners, millers, and others to come to the Grand Duchy of Vilnius and practice their trade and faith without any restrictions. Peasants were promised tax exemption for 10 years, and merchants were also exempt from any tariffs or taxes.
We look forward to welcoming our library consortium coordinators and publisher partners from all over the world to Vilnius.
