Accra, Ghana

EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) will have a strong presence at the first African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) conference and the 3rd African Library Summit which takes place at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) conference centre in Accra from 29 May to 3 June.

On 31 May, there will be two EIFL presentations:

  • EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) Impact Manager, Ugne Lipeikaite, and Guy Amarteifio, Regional Librarian at Greater Accra Regional Library / Ghana Library Authority, will present a paper titled ‘Feet on the ground: capacity building programme to foster new ICT-based public library services that meet community needs’. The paper discusses EIFL capacity building programme for public librarians in Ghana.

  • Mary Kinyanjui, librarian at KNLS Kibera Public Library in Nairobi (Kenya) will present a paper titled ‘Space, technology and content: a model for public libraries supporting formal education in developing countries’. The paper discusses implementation and impact of a project in which the library uses tablet computers pre-loaded with material linked to the school curriculum to support the education of children from Kibera, Nairobi’s largest slum. The project was initiated with a grant from EIFL-PLIP in 2012.

  • Another EIFL-PLIP grantee library, Masiphumelele Public Library in Cape Town (South Africa) will present a poster showcasing their programmes, including ICT training and employment information service for vulnerable youth.

EIFL will present the Africa winner of the EIFL Public Library Innovation Award for supporting education,  'Dr Robert Ouko' Memorial Community Library, with a trophy and certificate at a special awards ceremony during the conference.

On June 3, EIFL will host a post-conference titled ‘African Public Libraries on the Rise’. The event is an exciting opportunity for library leaders and librarians, representatives of library authorities, educators and other stakeholders to discuss current trends in public library service innovation, and the future direction of public libraries development in Africa.
